Australian Adventures: The Snug – Brunswick, VIC

Yesterday, was one of those, ‘I really fancy some pub food’ kind of days. However, being really new to an area meant we didn’t really know where to eat.

I checked Urban Spoon, and found a place that was both walking distance and had a score of 94%. Decision made.

The Snug Public House is an Irish bar and restaurant right in the middle of Sydney Road (which is the main road in Brunswick).

The walls are littered with Irish sporting memorabilia, and the exposed brick and tables at close vicinity makes it all feel really rather charming.

We were able to get a table without booking, but be warned, it gets booked up pretty quickly, so if you’re wanting a longer meal, book in advance.

The food.

We ordered the magic mushrooms to share as a starter, and it was HUGE. Definitely too big for one person. We received six whole field mushrooms coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried to perfection. It also came with some salad and an aioli dip.

I’m quite glad we shared the starter, because the main course was ridiculous.

Probably the biggest main course I’ve had in Australia, the Snug’s famous Beef Stew dish did not disappoint. Served in a WHOLE loaf of bread, the meat was tender and melted in the mouth. The vegetables were also incredible.

Keegan ordered a stuffed chicken breast, and got a roast dinner big enough for 2 people!

We had a few drinks, and the meal total came to just under $100, which I think is fairly reasonable considering the amount of food we received! You could definitely share a main and a side between 2 and still get full!

If you’re in Melbourne, and looking for some incredible pub grub, lovely service and the meat sweats, then you have to visit The Snug. It’s definitely worth the journey.
